In the movie, State of Fear, Netflix, directed by Pedro Morelli, the story of Brotherhood is carried on but the focus was placed on the next generation. The movie focuses on the tale of Cristina Ferreira who is a distinguished councilwoman but a secret member of the Brotherhood. Sao Paulo already has political tensions and when Elisa, the daughter of Edinho, gets kidnapped, the situation between the gang and the authorities is out of scale. What is left behind is a city which has been driven to riots, fear and retaliation.
The kidnapping is no longer an individual crisis but the seed that sprouts the massive turmoil. With violence going round the streets, Cristina has to face her political duty and the connection of her family.
Elisa is kidnapped, and this causes mayhem in the city.
The situation is worsened when Eliza is abducted by two unscrupulous police officers. What starts as an act of ransom, shortly turns out to be a lot greater in the scale, as the news about the act spreads the anger in the Brotherhood. It also increases the number of internal tensions in the group as leaders are torn between retaliation that is aggressive and that which is strategic.
Cristina first attempts to handle the situation with a lot of care so that she can avoid more bloodshed. But things get out of hand and Brotherhood attacks her and throws the city into the state of instability and fear.
Cristina’s Final Stand
At the climax, Cristina follows Tico, who is among the police officers who kidnapped Elisa. Whereas she manages to save her niece, she opts not to turn away but to move on with vengeance. This choice causes a tragic development of events.
In the process, the mother of Tico tries to rescue her son but dies in the process. The scene represents the way violence kills innocent people as well as the culprits. A little later, Tico shoots Cristina killing her and leaving Elisa, alone, in the midst of the scene.
Romero, Dalva, and the Expense of Violence.
Another group of police officers looking after a child that are featured in the film are Romero and Dalva. Their plot is presented in a promising tone, which has a tragic twist. During the disorientation in the riots, Elisa shoots at their car and thinks that it is threatening them. They are killed in the process of shooting.
Their destiny validates the main idea of the film, there can never be winners in the game of violence. They, however, have a baby who survived, which is a slight yet strong figure of hope in the middle of destruction.
The Future of Elisa and the Future of the Brotherhood.
The Brotherhood has a leadership vacuum with the death of Cristina and a number of leaders have disappeared. Elisa, who has seen the dark side of politics and the bloody uprising, can now be placed in a position to lead.
The conclusion is an indication that she may transform the organization to be the way she views justice. It is not clear whether she will repeat the cycle of revenge or take a different route, and this aspect makes the story open to interpretation and other possibilities.
